Are you a final-year student or recent graduate in journalism or communications? Dream of working in a fast-paced newsroom? The Brian White Scholarship is your chance to break into the world of commercial radio news.
This prestigious cadetship, awarded annually by Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA), is named in honour of Brian White, a pioneering radio broadcaster who became Australia’s first commercial radio cadet journalist in 1953. His legacy lives on through this program, which supports emerging talent and celebrates journalistic excellence.
Today, it offers the next generation of journalists hands-on experience in industry leading commercial radio newsrooms and a direct path into the industry.
What will you get?
As the 2025 Brian White Scholar, you’ll receive:
- A paid four-week placement across Nine Radio, ARN, NOVA Entertainment, and Southern Cross Austereo (SCA)
- Hands-on experience writing, producing, and presenting news
- Mentorship from some of Australia’s most respected radio journalists
- An exclusive finalist workshop with senior industry editors and leaders
You’ll be immersed in the heart of radio journalism covering real stories, meeting real deadlines, and working with real pros.
How do you apply?

2. A one-page cover letter outlining why you should be selected
3. Two written news bulletins based on current events:
a. One tailored to an AM audience
b. One tailored to an FM audience
c. Include the source material (links or screenshots to the story your bulletins are based on)
4. A recorded version (MP3) of one of the two bulletins you have written.
